The-Dream: Love King by jackiecous

YES. Seriously, y’all don’t know how long I’ve been waiting for something to leak off this Dream album (that was supposed to be out late last year).

Every couple weeks I’d check the likely blogs, then google “the-dream” and “love king” and come up with the same old results. But today, right when I least expected it… You might think, on first listen, that this just a more subdued ‘Rockin’ That Shit” (which was basically a more energetic “Shorty is The Shit”), but upon repeat listenings you will hear some layers of melodic nuance and lyrical play that show The-Dream is continuing to build upon his already golden formula.

Found it on The Fader first, but the link was taken down, so hear it at On Smash while you still can.

The-Dream does it again. Now hurry the hell up with Love King, that Ciara album and that (rumored) collabo album with Kanye West.

A-T-L-A-N-T-A-G-A dat where I stay.

Maybe you remember me raving about these girls during the lead up to the release of their debut, How to Be a Lady: Volume 1. Then again, maybe you don’t, because apparently no one bought the album (I got it for $5 the day it came out). This kind of blew my mind, as it was an excellent pop record (written by The-Dream) and really deserved to be huge. Songs like “Freaky Freaky,” “Friend Lover,” “Drink In My Cup” and “W.F.U” would have been major hits with the right promotion behind them (every song on the thing was a potential single).

Well, it looks like my fears of the girls being shelved forever (or worse: dropped) by the label were unfounded, as they’re currently readying How to Be a Lady: Volume 2, featuring this track. Maybe this time around the label can actually promote the thing, if that’s not too much to ask.

The-Dream: Walking On The Moon (feat. Kanye West) by jackiecous

Vodpod videos no longer available.

It’s about time! There is finally a video for The-Dream and Kanye West’s “Walking on the Moon,” one of the most obvious choices for a single off of The-Dream’s sophomore album. Looks like they were going for Michale + Janet Jackson’s “Scream” mixed with Star Wars, without actually living up to the coolness of either. Come on, suits, you couldn’t throw a little more money Dream’s way for a video shoot? Speaking of, couldn’t you throw a little more money at Electrik Red to promote their new album?

Either way, the song is still great, and it leaves me hoping those rumors of a Dream/Kanye “best of both worlds” collabo album are really real. Cross your fingers, folks.

You may recall how earlier I said you should keep an eye on Dream’s pet project, girl-group Electrik Red. Well On Smash just posted the remix of one of the songs from their upcoming album, How to Be A Lady Vol. 1 (May 26th). The song, “We F*ck You” features one of those completely ridiculous choruses that only The-Dream could have come up with: “Y’all don’t f*ck us, we f*ck you.” I suppose it’s meant to be empowering, but either way it’s weird enough that people are sure to go nuts over it.

Discovery: Orange Shirt by jackiecous

Did you know that Rostam Batmanglij (from Vampire Weekend) and Wes Miles (from Ra Ra Riot) have a band together? Or electronic musical project, or something. They’re called Discovery, and it’s funny that The Fader mentions The-Dream in their post about Discovery’s first single, because this song sounds to me like they’ve been listening to a lot of The-Dream and filtering it through an indie-rock lens to create a super concentrated ray of pop sunshine. Or something. Either way, this has got to be the most exciting sound I’ve heard in a while, and you can see just how much new music I’ve been wading through this week.

It seems like only yesterday that Vampire Weekend breathed new life into a slowly stagnating indie pop scene, and already Rostam is leading the way to the next level.

Oh, and obligatory LOL at Rostam’s last name being Batman(glij). Sorry.

Man, what a day for new music! Sorry, every time I head back to OnSmash they’ve got some new goodies up. Here’s yet another Dream collaboration, but this one’s actually better than that unfortunate Cassie song. This one’s a new Ciara single called “Lovers Thing,” and while not spectacular, hey, it’s sorta catchy. Get it while it’s hot: via OnSmash.
