After the universal triumph that was Hell Hath No Fury, Clipse have some absurdly high expectations to live up to with their third full length. On their new track, “Kinda Like A Big Deal,” we get a glimpse at what the future holds. The beat sounds like an outtake from Fury, in a good way. Clipse and Kanye bring serviceable verses to the game, and overall the song is an encouraging indicator of the next album. However, both Ye and Clipse drop some seriously bold (questionable?) lines. Clipse test the limits of recession era rap, bragging that “it’s a blessing to blow 100-thou in a recession.” The way fans and critics respond to this kind of line will reveal how much money worship the contemporary cultural landscape is really interested in. And Kanye? Well, his verse kind of tests the limits of decency, dropping the line “got head from a girl in special ed.” I think Yeezy may have missed a potential interpretation of this one.
