Hey everyone, stop working for a second and watch some music videos! After the jump are a handful of what MTV in the 90s would’ve called “Breakthrough Videos” by some of hip hop’s most forward thinking crazies. Enjoy!
Yeezy completely kills it with this one. The video, which juxtaposes timeless tribal imagery with the black-light psychadelia of today’s rave politics somehow seems to be conveying an ultimate message that people actually come from outer space. Or maybe just Kanye does.
I have to say I really didn’t expect this futuristic musical direction from Common, who usually looks to the golden age of hip-hop for inspiration, but it seems to be a breath of fresh air for the guy. Hell, maybe if people hadn’t hated so much on Electric Circus (which rules) he would’ve reached this point sooner. Of course, when you get down to it, maybe he’s not looking forward to spaced out cyborg rock as he is looking back at Afrika Bambaata’s “Planet Rock.”
This girl is a genius, and that’s about it.
PS: Congratulations to Okayplayer for deservedly winning the VH1 Hip Hop Honors Award of Best Hip Hop Site!
