10 Minute Mixes: Guilty Pleasures

August 23, 2008 by jackiecous

So I’m still learning how to use these CD turn tables, but I figured I might as well put them to good use.  I’m going to do a series of 10 minute mixes for kPtv in order to A: practice, and B: entertain you.  This first one, entitled “Guilty Pleasures” features a bunch of Freestyle and a few other songs that fit in with that corny dance theme.  This is actually some of my favorite stuff to listen to right now, to be honest.  Picked a few fairly obvious jams, but hey, I’ve only got 10 minutes here.  If you’re wondering where the time limit came from, that’s the maximum length of a YouTube video.

Muxtape Munday + Return of the RAZ

August 11, 2008 by jackiecous

pdd

Hey people, did you know my brother has a blog? Among other things, Persona Don Dada posts themed Muxtapes in order to learn y’all some knowledge about music, and the most recently posted one is electro themed. Sit back, relax, and prepare to feel like you’re riding a laser beam through the farthest reaches of the galaxy. Pretty killer playlist.

Also, if you haven’t noticed, RAZ has been falling behind in his duties of appearing bi-weekly to make you laugh. RAZ doesn’t pay the bills, as you may or may not know, and I’ve been overwhelmed with other tasks that do. However, not only is he back today (really this comic is intended for Monday, but take it a couple hours early, see if I care), but he is in negotiations to make appearances somewhere else very special very soon, so stick around for the fun.

Bow Wow Reneges On Mature Persona

August 9, 2008 by christianbeforechruch

To some of us, it seems only yesterday that Bow Wow was the cute, young singing sensation nephew of Snoop Dogg known as Lil Bow Wow. But as he grew, he chose to shed his childish image and adopt a more mature (pronounced ‘ma-toour’) moniker. Like his uncle before him, he hacked off 1/3 of his stage name and was reborn as Bow Wow. Since then, this man about town has screamed of adulthood, but his latest single has thrown his wizened status into question.

Pairing himself with golden child Soulja Boy, Bow Wow decided to build his latest jam around the aquatic pastime of Marco Polo. Haven’t heard this tasty treat. Well, take a gander at yonder youtube clip:

Oh how the mighty fall. Slain on the treacherous fields they plowed with their very hands. What hope is there for the more wicked of us?

But seriously, this is a great song. If nothing else, it proves that anyone can be a commercial rapper. Except K-Fed.

Metropolis Drops in 5

August 6, 2008 by jackiecous

janelle monae

Where did this girl come from? And by that I don’t mean “Kansas.” I mean, did they turn on that LHC particle accellerator in Switzerland yet? Because if they did, and that caused a wormhole to a future dimension to open up and pull this chick through, that would be the only acceptable explanation. It’s like Morris Day and the Time had a baby with the monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Her EP (I guess that’s what you’d call it) Metropolis: The Chase Suite is seeing a wide release on August 12th. In the meantime, you can get the track “Many Moons” in advance from Amazon.com’s MP3 store (no DRM, folks!). Upon first listen you may experience the eerie sensation of listening in on ghosts from the future, or you may just get up and start dancing.

International Blips and Squelches

blips

Looking to get your fix of electronic blips and squelches, but you’ve completely worn out the grooves on your Justice LP? Well there is good news coming your way from across the ocean in the magical lands of Japan and Sweden (I can’t decide which place is cooler right now). I stumbled upon a post on The FADER today containing an mp3 form Japanese band Avalon and thought I would share it with you. If that’s not enough to satiate your craving for music that sounds like it’s coming out of an 8-bit Nintendo, check out these rad swedes: Slagsmålsklubben! They describe their music as “Swedish modern keyboard.”

As a bonus I’ve posted the two funniest pictures form each of their myspaces, which coincidentally involve RAD RAZ style sunglasses. Have fun!

Diplo Gives Santogold the Mixtape Treatment

July 25, 2008 by jackiecous

santogold

As is probably the case with a lot of people, my first introduction both Diplo and M.I.A. was the Piracy Funds Terrorism mixtape the duo released a couple years back, before M.I.A.’s debut album Arular dropped. To this day, I feel that mix was some of the best work produced by either artist. In fact, two albums deep, I rather feel M.I.A.’s music works better in that format than the traditional LP format.

Well, if you’ve been wondering what to do with yourself ever since that mix came out, waiting patiently for something more, you’re in luck! Diplo has given the Piracy Funds Terrorism treatment to this year’s (M.I.A.) model, Santogold, in the form of his new mix, Top Ranking Santogold, A Diplo Dub. The title may be a mouthful, but the music goes down smooth. If you’re dying to check it out, Discobelle has the hook-up via Zshare.

Webcomic Spotlight: 1930 Nightmare Theatre

July 24, 2008 by jackiecous

Today’s featured webcomic is 1930 Nightmare Theatre (part of the Dumm Comics collective) by Ricky Garduno. It takes the aesthetics and character design of early black and white animation (think “Bimbo” from Betty Boop and you come close to the protagonist, Kimbo) and flips them on their head with bizarre, warped and completely inappropriate humor. I started writing RAD RAZ before I saw this comic, and thought RAZ was pretty wild and weird. 1930s takes a similar approach, but with an all-out, no-holds-barred attitude that makes RAZ seem tame in comparison.

1930s Nightmare Theatre updates every Thursday at Dumm Comics. Dumm Comics has 5 separate ongoing comic series, one for each day of the week. They are all stellar, so might check the rest while you’re there.

New Skateboard Designs

July 22, 2008 by jackiecous

decks
There are a couple new designs up in the shop (actually that’s not true, there are three of them). Check ‘em out. I’m partial to the teeth one, myself, but I do like the idea of my skateboard deck being a slice of pizza. As for the skull design, my girlfriend said it looks like something you’d get out of a temporary tattoo vending machine. I don’t know if that’s bad or not, because I was going for nostalgically tacky early nineties crap art, so maybe that’s the response I was aiming for. I feel like when I was 6 or 7 I would have thought it was the bomb.
